Jonah Rosenberg’s FABULOUS TRIO – “The Bulbous and The Budding”

In 2014, Brooklyn based pianist and composer Jonah Rosenberg recorded his first record leading a trio featuring two of New York City’s most imaginative creative-music iconoclasts, bass player James Ilgenfritz and drummer Kevin Shea. Jonah Rosenberg’s “Fabulous Trio” is a hybrid improvisational organism: drawing from Rosenberg’s work as a contemporary-classical composer, jazz musician and free-improviser, he has crafted compositions offering the trio musical scaffolding, through-composed architectures, gutted classical pieces and free aesthetics, brought to life through the spontaneous language of these skilled music makers.

In this period, Rosenberg was active as a composer in New York developing modern dance, experimental theater, contemporary-classical in addition to improvised music collaborative projects. His “Fabulous Trio” collaborators hail from similar creative worlds, with James Ilgenfritz lending his experience as a bass player in new-music, experimental, and electro-acoustic music in addition to improvisation with giants such as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Steve Swell and many others. Kevin Shea, provides creative drums to multitudes of projects including the mischievous “terrorist bebop” band Mostly Other People Do the Killing, rap sing and free-jazz duo Talibam!, and rock outfit People with guitarist Mary Halvorson.

Daniel Carter joins the band for two quartet pieces on saxophone and flute. Carter has been lending his multi-instrumental spontaneous music making to New York ensembles for over forty years having performed and collaborated with legendary figures Sun Ra, William Parker, Evan Parker, Charles Gayle, Peter Brötzmann and countless others.
